In the Temple of
Elemental Evil Gygax wrote “If [the heroes] need more seasoning
before continuing to the greater challenges, you may – and should – design and
develop other adventures in the area”. Thus, this entry in my
series on Ultimate Greyhawk. Much like how comics and movies will reboot a
franchise with a new take on an old concept, this is my personal re-imagining
of the Greyhawk Campaign Setting beginning with the venerable town of
Hommlet.
The following location is
numbered based on how it appears on the map of the village of Hommlet found
in T1-4: The Temple of Elemental Evil. You can see the rest of the entries
in the Ultimate Greyhawk sidebar of the blog.
23. Trapper's Cottage
Ulrik
and his family are poor and reclusive. They work as trappers’ fisher folk and
farmers. Ulrik lives with his spinster daughter Tanya and son Karl. They are excluded
from most town functions as the villagers hate them and thus when something
goes wrong (as they often do) these folk are implicated in the problem, despite
the fact that they may have had nothing to do with it. They do have a secret
which makes them seem suspicious. Tanya is beautiful but bossy. She will be
able to guide the party to many locations around the viscounty but will be a
real pain in the neck the whole time.

Adventure Seed: Whispers in the Darkness
While
hunting and trapping in the country-side Ulrik has heard strange and alien
buzzing and chanting in the woods and hills. They have filled him with fear and
he believes that whatever it was, it has followed him back to his home and is
watching him and his family. Thus far he has kept this to himself as he knows
no one in town cares for him and his family that much.
